Peace Like A River

It was a wide river, mistakable for a lake or even an ocean unless you'd been wading and knew its current. Somehow I'd crossed it... Now I saw the stream regrouped below, flowing on through what might've been vineyards, pastures, orhards... It flowed between and alongside the rivers of people; from here it was no more than a silver wire winding toward the city. - Leif Enger, Peace Like A River

The annual stampede

From Breitbart (via Drudge)...

Thousands of Muslim pilgrims rushing to complete a symbolic stoning ritual during the hajj tripped over luggage Thursday, causing a crush in which at least 345 people were killed, the Interior Ministry said.

The stampede occurred as tens of thousands of pilgrims headed toward al-Jamarat, a series of three pillars representing the devil that the faithful pelt with stones to purge themselves of sin.

The irony is that those who were stampeded probably hadn't thrown their rocks yet. Are they out of luck?

And yet quietly on a hillside, up on a cross, Jesus took on all our sins so that there was nothing left for us to do but live in thankfulness to God, love each other and die forgiven. How ironic.

Yes, one might say there's no need to pelt the devil with stones, Jesus did that for us.
